Sponsoring your Family Member (Permanent Residence)
|
Canada knows it is important to help families who want to come from other countries to reunite with their families in Canada. If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident you may sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, dependent child(ren), or other eligible relatives (parents or grandparents) to come and live in Canada.
Your family may become permanent residents of Canada and may live, study, and work in Canada. If you sponsor your relative to come to Canada, you are responsible for supporting your relative financially when he or she arrives. You must make sure your spouse or relative does not need to seek financial assistance from the government.
The first step is for you to apply as the sponsor. Both the sponsor and the applicant must meet certain requirements. An application for a Family Class sponsorship can be made if your spouse, common law partner, dependent children, or other eligible family members live inside or outside Canada.
There are 2 different categories for sponsoring your family.
Spouses, Partners, Dependent Children
Sponsors must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits them to be financially responsible for their relative, if necessary. The sponsor must also provide financial support for a spouse, common-law partner, for 3 years from the date they become a permanent resident.
Parents, grandparents, brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters, or grandsons who are orphaned, under 18 years of age & not married or in a common-law relationship
The sponsor and the applicant must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits them to provide financial support for 10 years from the date they became a permanent resident.
The sponsor must provide sufficient evidence that they make the Low Income Cut Off threshold.
Once an application for sponsorship has been approved, the applicant may make his/her application for permanent residence. Depending on the type of case, both applications could be made simultaneously. Applicants for permanent residence must go through medical, criminal and background screening.
Processing times for spousal/partner applications vary between 4 months and 12 months.
Processing times for family class applications vary between 13 months and 22 months.
